Pattern Layout

Updated: Oct 27, 2018

The time is coming for Preen to showcase their Spring/ Summer 2019 collection in London Fashion Week. The studio becomes extremely busy. A lot of staff had been staying really late in the office and even all of design intern has been asked to stay a bit late to help them preparing the collection. Mainly all departments have a lot of things to do in order to prepare for the show except for production team. I feel that we are just in normal stage. I mainly believe that happened because we are just responsible for manufacturing process so we will be busy after the show when they want the garments to be made in large quantity. Because of that, in this week apart from helping production team I am also helping product development team since they are really busy and only have one intern left because the rest of them has already finished their contract.

The job I was doing in Product development its completely different from what I used to do in production. In product development I mostly help with pattern layout. Pattern layout is really important for them. Through pattern layout they will know how much fabric they need in one garment that makes it easier for them to calculate everything.

Basically pattern layout is placing the pattern of garment on mat that have the same width with the fabric its actually need very efficiently according to its grain line, so when it comes to manufacturing process there will be no fabric wasted. Since I learned a lot of pattern cutting in Uni. I did not really encounter any big problem when helping product development. It was really fun and enjoyable. Throughout the process I get a lot of new knowledge from different area of my placement. This process roughly teaches me the idea of how big company doing their product costing.

Another job of product development team that I found really interesting is finding supplier. However, since I am only helping them for a few days I did not get the chance to do it. I will imagine that it would be a lot of fun to know how to find supplier and deal with them. Hopefully, if next time I am helping the team again I can help with this part.
