In production team, I am dealing a lot with logistic, pattern and fabric. Today I was asked to buy some fabric for sample to send to the factory. I really love to do fabric shopping, since I was in Uni. I always go to Birmingham to buy some fabric and making my own clothes, it always my favorite things to do in my free time. Additionally, through this I will get more knowledge about fabric, such as type of fabric and the good quality or not so good quality fabric
I was asked to find some white laces and a very specific color of orange of nylon. At first I went to Shepherd’s bush, I did not encountered a lot problem when finding the laces as the color is easy to find and a lot of shop in Shepherd’s bush also selling good quality fabric that fit their standard in a good price, however, I could not find any of nylon in the same color at Shepherds’ bush. The shade is either too light or too dark from what they want. So I went to Berwick Street after, and unfortunately, the same thing happened, I still couldn’t find the right color for nylon even though I was already looking in every single shop.
It took me hours to find it yet I still couldn’t find the fabric. It makes me realized that fashion brand especially big brand are really concerned in every detail thing that they need in one garment. If they want the specific color or quality they need to get the same no matter what and they don’t want it to be change.
However, as it becomes really late and most of the shop are almost close, I came back to the office with just laces swatch, they are really appreciate what I have done but I just feel that it would have been better if I could find the fabric. Once again, it’s a really tiring experience yet so fun. Hopefully I could use this experience and knowledge when I do fabric shopping for my collection in final year.
