Logistics

Updated: Feb 10, 2019

It is two weeks before Christmas break, and in preparation for the upcoming year, we were tasked to handle shipments for high end retailers so they would be restocked for the new year. The interns were tasked to help out with logistics work but since the other intern’s contract had ended, I was only intern left at the office. At the moment, there is only one person working at logistics; the rest will only join in January when the warehouse is ready to use. So that leaves the two of us responsible for the whole thing.

Basically, what we had to do was to gather the items that needed to be shipped. Preen has two clothing lines: Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Preen Line, and each line has its own set of orders. For both sets of orders, we started by going through racks of clothes to allocate the correct items, and then checked to see if we got the right quantity for each design. The next step we had to do was to wrap, box, and label the items accordingly. And for the final step, we pile the boxes up, ready for the mailing couriers to deliver them to different high-end retailers such as Harrods, MatchesFashion, Net-a-Porter, Harvey Nichols, and Selfridges.

It seems like a simple concept; all you have to do is to make sure you get the orders right, but when you divide the task with only one other person, it became very overwhelming. In addition, each store usually orders a lot of different style with small quantity per style that make it more confusing. For example, Net-a-porter order 400 garments, and the 400 garments usually contain 20 style with only 20 garments per style. What makes it hard is that we needed to pay attention to every detail like the code and the color palette as the styles are sometimes quite similar or they have the same code but with different colors. We really need to make sure that we pack the right order for the right store. Besides that, we have tens of rails full of different styles so it takes quite some time to find the specific style that each store ordered.

Throughout this process, excellent attention to detail, organizational skill and good memory is the main key, therefore I feel like I developed a lot of those skills during this process. I believe that in the future it will be really important for the industry. So, learning it now is really useful for me to prepare for the future and be ready for the industry.
