Sample Sale

Updated: Dec 13, 2018

The end of the year is fast approaching and that means a lot of exciting things are happening. Christmas is coming, and soon we will get our long-awaited break; I, for one, cannot wait to finally spend the holiday with my closest friends. But as somebody who works in fashion, there is one more thing I love about December: sales. Every end of year, brands ranging from high street to high end start to offer huge discounts, and some of them even participate in sample sales.

For those of you who are not familiar with the term sample sale, sample sales are organized to get rid of items from previous seasons that did not sell out. During these sales, prices are reduced from 30% to 90% off, which means you can get your hands on designer pieces for a lot less money.

My internship place, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, is one of the many brands holding sample sales every December and behind every successful event, there is a team of stressed out people making sure the event runs smoothly. For this specific sale, most of the preparation happened at the office, and my role for this event was to handle the garments that was going to be sold.

Back at the office, everyone was busy preparing for the sale, and the place became really hectic. A team of six, me included, had to unpack boxes of clothes before hanging and tagging each item of clothing. Most garments sold for the sale come from past seasons, and normally it can go all the way back to spring/summer of the previous year. One of the many interesting things I learnt during my internship is that sample sales are normally limited to one stock per design. Items from the last season are also on sale, though not reduced as much as those from three to four seasons ago.

Despite the tiresome preparation process, everyone was also excited for the sale because of the benefits we get from working for the company. As employees, we are given further discounts from the sample sale and allowed to purchase garments at very affordable prices. Some of the managers, along with a few other interns, were also given the chance to help out at the sample sale on Bond Street and experience the craziness that happened on the big day. I wish I could have gone as well but my manager and I still had a lot of things to take care of at the office and hence we had to stay.

Overall, I would say I had a pleasant experience taking part on this sale. I learnt a lot about sample sales and how to make sure the event runs smoothly and successfully; from marketing strategies to advertising them on social media and to eventually handle each and every discounted item before sending them to the location. By the end of the sample sale, I believe that I had gained such important information that can be applicable to my university projects when I do come back for my final year.
